HOME STOP THE RAPE IN DARFUR PROTECT THE HUMAN HOW WE DO IT WHAT YOU CAN DO
“If she goes to collect water she will be raped, if she doesn't her children will die.”

Rape is being used as a weapon of war in the conflict in Darfur, Western Sudan. The rape of women and girls - some as young as eight - is widespread.

Halima lives in a refugee camp in Darfur. The camp is surrounded by armed men. Halima knows that one day - perhaps today - the men will catch her. And one by one they will rape her. Hundreds of thousands of women living in refugee camps in Darfur face the same grisly reality every single day of their lives. They've already been driven from their own homes by the Janjawid, groups of armed men once backed by the Sudanese Government.

“Janjawid militia and government soldiers attacked a primary school for girls, raping the pupils. They were aged between 8 and 13. They were in shock, bleeding, screaming and crying. It was horrific. Because I told people what happened, the authorities arrested me. They said, ‘We will show you what rape is.' They beat me severely. At night, three men raped me. The following day the same thing, different men. Torture and rape, every day, torture and rape..”

The people of Darfur are crying out for security. Thousands of civilians have been killed, tortured and raped and hundreds of thousands and been forcibly displaced since the conflict started in 2003.

Amnesty International is at the forefront of a concerted campaign calling for an effective peacekeeping force to be sent to Darfur - and we are making real headway. We've forced the conflict onto the UK government's agenda. And our lobbying has directly influenced UN resolutions.

Now we are calling for words to be put into action and for an effective peacekeeping force to be on the ground as soon as possible. THE PEOPLE OF DARFUR NEED YOUR HELP
